Matt Cutts has given some metrics which can give an idea about which google penguin has affected a website. What procedure to follow in order to avoid penguin algorithm updates? What steps to incorporate for regaining previous keyword rankings on SERPs of a website? Get detailed information.
Matt Cutts of the Google corps team tweeted publicly that different websites are affected by Penguin to differing degrees. This statement was actually a response to relevant question asked to Cutts at one of the conferences that happened this year. Cutts is always very particular about noting down webmaster issues and resolving them. The issue with Google webmaster tools especially Penguin goes back to a year back when Matt Cutt tweeted to www.verticalresponse.com that there actually seemed to be a lot of problems with back links and their representations by Google tools.
What’s the implication for differing penguin representations?
In the past several websites have received unusually harsh linking penalty notices/ warnings from Google webmaster though their rankings have not been affected in the least. There are other websites which have received just one notification (pretty generic) and then notice only certain pages going down in ranking (very specification). There are still other unfortunate websites who have just received a couple of warnings and then seen their site irrevocably removed from Google.
This to say that Penguin doesn’t really look at every website in a logical way so don’t be surprised if Google doesn’t really act logically with your website and your warnings/ notifications do not coherently link with existing rankings.
All about links and Google
Google has this way of looking at links as votes made by the editorial team. In short the more links a website get, the higher it’s ranking. However being a smart search engine, Google takes the paint analyze quantity, quality and relevance of the surrounding websites that try to link to the website in question. A link profile is created for every website. Whenever a huge number of link increases, unusual activity or anchor text issues take place, Google raises an active alarm to further investigate whets happening.
What happens after Penguin update
5 things came into force after the updated penguin and lots of websites began to feel that their rankings have gone down. The most common issues were caught and underlined by analytics experts.
- Paid links began to be detected by Google and because the search engine disapproves of paid links and thinks of them as a manipulative gesture, the corresponding website ranks go down
- Spammy names and comments which were engineered (artificial) were detected by Google and the ranking was lowered.
- As mentioned earlier linking site relevance was monitored by Penguin. That’s the reason why spammy or irrelevant websites commenting on your website will not work well s a link increasing rank enhancing tactic any more.
- If a super thin content featured link had a 100% matching anchor text with a website then this was deemed to be an article marketing site and was disapproved by Google.
- If your website has been unfortunate enough to receive back links from websites that have spam, malware, unnecessary pop ups and poor content apart from porn content (god forbid) then your website is going to be in big trouble from Penguin!!
